IN the grander scheme of things the comings and goings at Wisbech Town Football Club have increasingly less relevance.
Compared to, for example, the burning issue of tea bag ordering for the Rose Fair, the concern over our football club is well down the pecking order.
The handful of supporters now wending their way out to Outwell for home games are to be congratulated for their stamina and the on field performances, nobly led of late by Gary Setchell and whose contract is now extended for another season, deserve recognition.
However there are issues which have influenced our coverage of the club and these mainly concern the necessity for a new ground and the circumstances which brought that about.
To read the comments on the club's website is to encounter an uneasy, and unhealthy, assortment of grudging attitudes. At times these are sneering and vituperative in their besmirching of each other.
That a recent 'posting' on the website uttered a profanity against this newspaper, and the editor in particular, is almost incidental to the issue we have and that is why the club have allowed the comments to remain.
They either believe them to be true (they're not) or what is more likely is that club officials pay scant regard to their supporters, drip feeding them with morsels of information as and when they fancy it.
In truth few fans know about the state of the club's finances, and even fewer can understand the routes taken to selling off Fenland Park for the pipe dream of a new stadium, no matter what the cost may have been for their new neighbours.
By its very insularity the club must ask if it its stewardship is up to scratch and if it could do more to embrace a wider community.
We need to see evidence that they do.
