CAMBRIDGESHIRE County Council says there are no fears over the county's salt supplies this year, as weather warnings are released for heavy snow in Fenland.

The county council last year fell desperately short of salt supplies to grit the county's roads, when a cold snap gripped the East of England.

Yesterday, the AA said that half of councils in the UK have only enough road salt for six days of continuous freezing.

But today a county council spokesman said: "We have got around 9,000 tonnes of salt stood at our three depots ready to go which, bearing in mind we drop about 200 tonnes every time we go out, means we have enough for 45 gritting rounds.

"We have plenty for the Festive season and there is plenty to replenish our stock through the winter."

However, the Met Office today issued a severe weather warning for Cambridgeshire for heavy snow on Thursday and Friday.

On Thursday, there is a "moderate risk of severe weather affecting eastern parts of England. Showers will readily turn to snow giving local accumulations of 5 to 10cm".

And on Friday "snow showers, especially during the first half of the day, will give local accumulations of 5 to 10cm".

Today's anticipated sleet and snowfall, predicted yesterday by the Met Office, has now been dismissed. But there could also be sleet overnight tonight and possibly tomorrow.
