VANDALS uprooted and destroyed around 50 trees the day after they had been planted as part of a world record breaking bid.

The trees were planted in Wisbech on Saturday by a team from Fenland Street Pride but the following day residents spotted them being vandalised by youngsters.

Kate Armstrong, environmental project officer for Fenland District Council said: "Everyone is gutted over this but we are not going to be defeated and there will be some replanting. It is not going to detract from the great day and the incredible effort that everyone put into it."

Street Pride co-ordinator Jeanette Milner was among the team planting the trees on the piece of land in Burcroft Road.

She is hoping to work with police in a bid to get those responsible for the vandalism to plant some more trees.

She said: "It is a difficult situation but we have done more than 200 events and this is only the second one which has been vandalised so we have not done too badly. Street Pride has done such a lot of good work and I don't want this to spoil it.
