ANGLIA in Bloom judges were in Wisbech this morning to see whether volunteers have done enough to triumph in this year’s Best Large Town category.

The Capital of the Fens was proudly handed the crown in 2008 and 2009 but lost its title last year to Huntingdon. Wisbech, in the category for town’s with a population of between 12,001-35,000 residents, did however maintain it’s gold award.

Volunteers have worked tirelessly to maintain flowers, beds and displays in a number of places around the town since then in the hope of recapturing the coveted crown this year.

Judges were welcomed in Wisbech this morning at 9am with coffee at Elgood’s Brewery and garden before visiting a number of locations in the town, including the Nene Waterfront and Wisbech Park.

St Peter’s Primary School showed off their youngsters ‘Our Place’ garden before Bob Ollier, Anglia in Bloom chairman and Parks and Open Spaces Manager for Fenland District Council and judges Colin Drew and George Dawson, continued their whistle-stop tour of the town.

The group, who were shown around by Wisbech in Bloom volunteers Penny Stocks, Brian Massingham and Bob Wataerfield also met Jeanette Milner, the council’s Street Pride co-ordinator at Octavia Hill’s Birthplace House.

The tour ended with lunch and a chance for judges to meet some of Wisbech in Bloom’s sponsors and helpers.
