FOR more than 20 years Roger Green WAS the Wisbech Standard.
His knowledge and professionalism was second to none. He was the perfect role model for the many young journalists who started their careers at this newspaper.
He continued his unrivalled commitment to Wisbech for 12 years as a councillor on Fenland District Council and Wisbech Town Council. Every day he fought passionately for his town ... the town of Wisbech.
Numerous organisations also benefited from Mr Green’s enthusiasm, including Wisbech Town Football Club, Wisbech Chamber of Commerce and Wisbech Regeneration and Development Trust.
On Monday, Mr Green was killed in a head-on crash on the A47 Wisbech bypass. He was on his way home from a meeting at Fenland Hall.
His wife Margaret said: “He loved his town of Wisbech, which he considered to be the capital of the Fens.”
Tributes have flooded in from relatives and colleagues, including Clive Frusher, one of the many young journalists who worked at the Wisbech Standard under Mr Green.
He said: “Top man. Top husband. Top dad. Top sports journalist. Top editor.
“He had a great work ethic, a professionalism and an honesty and integrity. He was one of my heroes.”
Councillor Alan Melton, leader of Fenland District Council, said: “This sad news of Roger’s death leaves a big hole in the political arena of Fenland District Council.”
