SO why weren’t all services – gas, electricity and water - cut off at an empty bungalow destroyed in an explosion which came close to killing a neighbour?

That’s one of the questions being asked in Leverington following the explosion which razed a semi-detached bungalow to the ground.

It has emerged that police twice visited the bungalow – on Saturday and Sunday - following reports by the outgoing tenant of copper piping and copper tank thefts.

The response by landlords, Roddons Housing Association, was to send a plumber on Sunday afternoon... but he left when no-one answered the door.

He left a calling card instead.

Hours later an explosion rocked through St Leonard’s Road, destroying the bungalow and leaving neighbours thankful they were unhurt.

Many questions remain unanswered.
