The opportunity for vulnerable people to have access to a proper meal has been given a big boost thanks to Tesco and a food supply organisation.

FareShare has linked up with the supermarket giant’s Community Food Connection programme, which will see surplus unsold food items made available to vulnerable people in Wisbech via an app.

The FoodCloud app allows stores to alert local charities to unsold fruit, vegetables, ready meals and meat and dairy products, which can then be collected and turned into meals for people in the town.

There have already been one million meals donated via the Community Food Connection following a pilot in 14 stores across the country, and 2,220 charities have signed up to the scheme so far.

Rifka Chakkalakal, community food programmes manager at Tesco said: “No food that can be eaten should go to waste. We’re really excited to start working on this initiative to ensure that any unsold food we have is made use of. We are looking forward to forging strong links with local charities and community groups in Wisbech, and to use this initiative to support their efforts to help vulnerable people in our community.”
