Wisbech Grammar School rugby team will bike and row 385 miles at Tesco Extra to raise money for charity and their upcoming USA tour.

The 25-person team is raising funds for children’s rugby charity Wooden Spoon by travelling the length of their tour on Friday 14 (7-11pm) and Saturday 15 July (8am-2pm). They will also be selling American themed cakes over the weekend.

Oliver Mann, 1st XV sixth form player, said: “It is really important that we give back to the community and focus on our fundraising efforts.

“The values of Wooden Spoon are similar to our own where the school promotes and inspires all their pupils to have passion, integrity and team work.

“I am very proud to be part of the rugby team and representing the School in America.”

The rugby team will be starting their tour in San Francisco and ending in Los Angeles where they will play four fixtures.

“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and the school has been busy planning and fundraising for the trip,” said a spokesman for the school.

“As a registered charity (WGS), the Governors have set up a bursary fund making it possible to provide financial assistance to pupils who would not otherwise be able to take up the offer of a place, allowing them to achieve their full potential.

“The boys wanted to also raise money for Wooden Spoon which is the Children’s Charity of Rugby. From sensory rooms, specialist playgrounds and sports activity areas to respite, medical and community care, they fund around 70 projects each year that support disadvantaged and disabled children.

“Since their founding in 1983, they’ve distributed in excess of £24 million, helping over one million young people.

“So, come along to Tesco Extra on Cromwell Road, Wisbech to support these passionate 25 rugby players and offer a donation in support of their efforts.”

The Mayor of Wisbech Councillor Steve Tierney will also be supporting the team with a visit at 10am on Saturday.
