A biscuit tin filled with treasured family memories has been reunited with an 82 year old woman in Wisbech.
In an emotional return the tin was handed over to Molly Auger after we ran a plea in our newspaper.
Molly said: “I can’t believe it, after all this time, are you sure it is my brother, are you sure it is my family” when she learnt of the photographs, medals and memorabilia found in a biscuit tin in a house in Wisbech.
The youngest of 11 children, Molly told how she couldn’t believe that the tin of memories of her brother, Claude Clarke, had been found.
Family member Tony Young explained how the family will have been known to those living locally.
He said: “I”m sure once she has got over the shock she will be delighted to have the tin with its contents - upon which she may be able to enlarge, though I think she was quite young when Claude secreted it.”
“When Molly was about 14 in the late 1940s she was voted as the roller skating queen in the Wisbech Corn exchange and one of the family was employed as a reader for either the Standard or the Advertiser in the 50s and 60s.
We were also contacted by Joy van Hoek-Goodman who said: “It will be nice to see what he left in the box like old photos.”
The biscuit tin of memories was handed in to the Royal British Legion after last year’s two minutes’ silence in Wisbech.
The tin had been found in a property in town.
Christine Green, married to Cambs 876 Remembered Project leader Glen Green, spent a year researching the life of Claude Clarke.
She handed over the tin along with Royal British Legion representative Bob Doughty.
Claude, born in 1926, was a former naval officer who served in WW2.
His father lived at Canon Street, where the biscuit tin was found, while Claude died in 2015 at the age of 89 at Hickathrift House residential home in Marshland St James.”
