DISABLED Claude Smith has explained why people in Fenland ride mobility scooters on the road - it is safer.
Mr Smith, 69, of St Michael's Avenue, Wisbech, needs to use a mobility scooter himself after suffering a stroke 18 months ago, as well as having arthritis in both knees.
He said: "I was advised to use the roads and it is also said by the manufacturer of the scooter that they are for the road.
"I would not be able to ride on the footpaths because people are not sensible enough to be trusted these days and the footpaths are not for disabled use."
Mr Smith added that people who use scooters on the road use their common sense and drive them safely.
He said: "You have to have a scooter test before they are brought out for you to ride them."
He was responding to criticism - aired previously in this paper- about disabled people who drive their scooters on the road.
