THE editor of the Wisbech Standard and Cambs Times has announced his decision to retire in the New Year.
Brian Asplin, editor of the Standard since 1993 and at the helm of both papers since 1998, will leave at the end of January.
Mr Asplin, 63, who joined the Cambs Times as an indentured trainee reporter in 1964, moved to Wisbech in 1968 as senior reporter, later to become chief reporter, news editor and then deputy editor before taking the editorship.
"I've had a great time in newspapers and the lasting memory of my career will be how both our titles have consistently punched well above their weight, which is down to the talented and dedicated staff I've worked with along the way.
"But after almost 44 years in the industry I'm looking forward to a less-demanding lifestyle, and the time has come to hand over these two excellent titles into the care of a younger and more energetic editor.
