Open day will show off Fenland wind turbines

AN open day will be held this weekend to showcase a new educational programme called Energy Works.

During the past year Cambridgeshire Environmental Education Service (CEES) - which is part of Cambridgeshire County Council - has been developing Energy Works educational visits at its new base at Coldham Wind Farm near March.

Working with its partners in the venture, Fenland District Council, The Co-operative Group and ScottishPower Renewables, CEES is now looking forward to welcoming visitors to a special Open Day to be held at Coldham on Sunday 8 June.

n Becoming involved with recycling and composting

n Examining a wind turbine

n Building a mini-turbine in the Energy Works centre

n Learning about food with the Farm to Fork programme

n Finding out about support for renewable energy in homes

Drug addict stole perfume to get cash

DRUG addict Gary Lockwood was picking up a prescription when he stole a perfume set promoted by Sex in the City star Sarah Jessica Parker.

Lockwood stole the gift set from Lloyds Pharmacy in Chatteris and sold it to get cash for drugs.

And when arrested, 32-year-old Lockwood admitted he had also stolen two more sets on a previous occasion.

"He has been a drug addict for six or seven years, and has been trying to get off it himself," solicitor Roger Glazebrook told Fenland magistrates. "He was working as a fork lift driver until December when he was injured, and he is now on benefit."

Lockwood, of Wimpole Street, Chatteris, was picking up a prescription for medication to address his back pain at the time of the offence.

"He was tempted to take something and sell it to buy drugs," added Mr Glazebrook.

Lockwood was fined £200 and must pay £87 compensation and a £15 surcharge.

Euro MP welcomes news of property scam inquiry

CAMBRIDGESHIRE Labour Euro MP Richard Howitt today welcomed the news that the European Parliament is to carry out an investigation into property scandals in Spain.

Dodgy property deals in Spain have affected thousands of people from across the European Union and continue to be a concern to anyone in Cambridgeshire thinking of buying a house or second home there, he said.

The European Parliament was responding to a rising number of petitions received from at present over 20,000 people in the EU affected by these dodgy deals.

Richard Howitt MEP said: "I am pleased that the European Parliament has decided to investigate these dodgy deals. People are living in fear of losing their homes, security and future.

"Many of my constituents own property in Spain and this affects people from all around the European Union, as well Spanish citizens.

"I will continue pushing and harassing on this matter until we have a resolution which addresses the needs of thousands of people who are trapped because of these property scandals.

"I urge the Government of Spain to consult with the regional governments to bring an end to this sorry and shameful series of abuses.

"If there is no movement on this matter we will have to look at what options we may have in restricting the flow of European Union funds to Spain."

Shoplifter who steal meat said he needed to pay rent

SHOPLIFTER Maria Kemp stole joints of meat from a March supermarket because she needed cash to pay the rent.

Just 10 days after being given a conditional discharge for stealing meat, Kemp was helping herself to more joints in a local store.

At Wisbech courthouse on Tuesday, 38-year-old Kemp, of London Road, Chatteris, admitted stealing meat from Somerfield in March on May 2, and asked for two further offences to be taken into consideration.

Fenland magistrates were told that Kemp had been in court on April 22, when she was given a conditional discharge for stealing £50 worth of meat.

At that hearing, Kemp - who has a prescription for the heroin substitute methadone - claimed she had stolen "in a moment of madness," after being suspended from her job as a microbiologist due to a drugs raid on her home.

Prosecutor Andrew Williams told how Kemp left the Somerfield store on May 2 with stolen pork and lamb joints. When arrested, she told police she had stopped shoplifting, because she had a job.

"She has been on drugs for a long time," said solicitor Roger Glazebrook. "She lives with a partner, they pay rent, but their landlord does not have people on benefit. She now has a job in the fields."

Sentencing was adjourned until June 25 for a report to be prepared by the probation service.

Back behind the wheel seven days before ban ended

A BANNED driver got behind the wheel of his car just SEVEN days before his disqualification ended.

Lithuanian Andrius Dolgovas had misunderstood the terms of his ban, imposed last January for an offence of drink driving, magistrates were told.

He was given a 16-month ban on January 22 - but thought the ban had started when he was in court earlier that month.

"At court he had a Russian language interpreter so did not fully understand the proceedings," said solicitor Pat Whiles. "He thought his ban started on January 4, and ended on May 3."

Dolgovas, 24, of Hedgelands, Wisbech, admitted driving when disqualified and without insurance on May 15.

He was ordered to carry out 40 hours of unpaid work, and pay £60 costs. His driving record will be endorsed with six points.

Heroin addict stole printer from Wisbech Post Office

A WOMAN battling against heroin dependency stole a printer from Wisbech Post Office.

The machine was found in Sarah Burton's vehicle after police stopped her as she drove at high speed towards Wisbech St Mary.

Also in the car was a quantity of heroin, Fenland magistrates were told on Tuesday, when the 32-year-old admitted theft and possessing the class A drug.

Prosecuting, Andrew Williams said police followed Burton's car speeding car at around 9.15am on March 27.

The vehicle stopped at traffic lights, and Burton, of Chapel Avenue, Wisbech St Mary, gave a negative alcohol test. Her car was searched, and the £17.99 Lexmark printer stolen two days earlier was discovered, along with some heroin.

The court heard that Burton was given a drug rehabilitation requirement by magistrates in Norfolk back in February.

"Probation officers have been pleased with the progress she is making, and her sincere attempts to turn her life around," said solicitor Ben Pearson.

Probation services officer Marie Ludlum added: "She is doing really well and trying very hard to get off substance misuse, she may go away for a detox programme."

Magistrates gave Burton a six-month supervision order to run alongside her current order, and ordered the drugs to be forfeited and destroyed. She must pay £60 costs.
