WISBECH Library is to close on September 30 to enable work to begin on a £2.5 million re-vamp funded partly by a 32 million Lottery grant.
The county council says the work will transform what is Cambridgeshire's third biggest library into more spacious and modern facilities.
"It will become a showpiece for county council library and information services in Fenland," said Councillor Fred Yeulett, Cabinet member for community and a Fenland county councillor.
Planning permission for the £2.5 million project has now been granted and the library at The Crescent, will close its doors for the final time at 5.30 pm, on Tuesday, September 30.
Wisbech Library will be extended and remodelled at ground and first floor level, and include a new learning centre, a community meeting room and better facilities throughout - more room for children, new toilets and a lift.
Cllr Yeulett said local people have been involved in planning the project from the very beginning.
"Hundreds of people took part in a consultation that helped prepare a successful bid for Big Lottery funding and customers alongside local groups and organisations continue to work with the council to design the library and shape the new facilities it will provide," he said.
Work is expected to take around a year to complete and during the closure a temporary library will be available just five minutes walk away at the Queen Mary Centre, in Queens Road. The temporary library will open on Monday, October 13, at 10 am.
In addition, from October 2 a mobile library will be available every Thursday, in the Market Square, from 9.30 am-4.00 pm.
