FENLAND District Council is taking a proactive role in ensuring the safety and cleanliness of tattoo and body piercing establishments, which now have responsibilities under new by-laws.
Officers and councillors have been working closely with local businesses to make sure that residents who want to get any piercing or tattoos can do so in a safe and clean environment.
To help local businesses comply the council has published guidance on hygiene procedures which is being posted on the council's website. Hard copies will be provided on request by contacting the Environment and Safety Team.
Cllr Peter Murphy, Portfolio Holder with responsibility for health and safety, was shown around the Tattoo Crazy salon in March by award-winning tattooist Barry K. to see how hygiene precautions are implemented in practice.
Cllr Murphy said: "As tattooing and piercing popularity increases, the new by-laws will help tattoo businesses in Fenland to meet the council's high standards. The safety of people who choose to get a tattoo or body piercing is top priority."
