I WRITE with regard to your regular correspondent Reg Kemp's comments of last week.

Since the Second World War (mainly fought by conscripts), thousands of National Servicemen fought and served in Korea, Malaya, Cyprus and Aden and gave service to their country.

Generally, after 13 weeks basic training and after leave, troop ships would have taken them off to various parts of the world to fight and protect - and many gave their lives.

We no doubt resembled a shambles on our first morning of training, but after 13 weeks of gruelling infantry training, lectures on the troop ship and further training overseas, we were ready for whatever came our way.

I will always be ready to thank the men that trained us, unfortunately most of that generation have passed away.
