I AM an 84 year old Normanic War Veteran and thought I should write a letter with my views of why I think the St Peter's Road Post Office is still required in this area. I will give you some facts about March, since I have lived here for 24 years.

First the census for 1981 said the population was 14,475, 2001 census the figure was between 19,000 and 20,000.

I would guess that the figure now must be at least 21,000, if not more.

Since we have been here four post offices have closed, though some March people born here tell me it's more.

So why is it that more people living here would have fewer requirements of Post Office services?

The DVLA will only be in one place and all the parcels will go to Broad Street, as well as all other services like pensions and family allowances.

This is going to add to the queues in Tesco's small shopping area.

We on the south side of the town will have no post office at all, and for me it's a walk of 0.8 of a mile to St Peter's Road and will be a further mile to the town centre. Don't forget the walk home too.

I do hope that the excuse for closing the post offices is that people can get money from cash points at banks. A lot of extra people getting cash from cash points are asking to be mugged. At least in the post office you can safely put the money away in a purse or wallet.

The new college and projected estate of 1,700 homes between Knights End Road and Burrowmoor Road will be an additional strain on the Post Office, which nobody seems to have taken into account.
