THE rash of closures and threatened closures of sub-post offices, particularly in rural areas, is a travesty of public trust encouraged by an out-of-touch government devoid of any consideration.

It has knowingly isolated itself from democratic requirements of the country's population that relies on a raft of essential services provided by this necessary service.

Has it been considered by the faceless bureaucrats involved in local procedures that removing the St Peter's Road sub-post office will leave almost a third of the town without postal facilities. It is ludicrous.

The excuse that a postal service is available "on-line" is not a valid one. Some facilities are available "on-line" but computers cannot hand out cash and that will cause grave concern to numerous post office customers, especially pensioners who do not want the inconvenience that would be entailed. They already have more than enough to worry about.

I would like to think that those responsible for closures and threatened closures of such a valuable service will think again.

We can all play a part by objecting in the strongest possible terms. On this note I am surprised that no councillor or council official has registered complaint about the threatened closure. I ask what we put them in power for.
