I AM responding in defence of our town beadle.
I recently attended a primary school assembly which the mayor was the guest of honour. At the conclusion the floor was opened for questions, mostly directed to the beadle.
He was absolutely brilliant. The questions were answered in a way that not only entertained the children but also provided them with information about local and national traditions.
After talking to him myself it was obvious that he was extremely proud of the position he holds and the dignity and respect for that position was of the utmost importance.
It is important to hold on to traditions probably more now than ever before but everything has to give a little to gain a lot.
