WITH thanks and apologies to John Betjeman.
Come friendly bombs and fall on Slough,
But there's more pressing problems now,
There's service stops like Watford Gap
And shopping malls and similar crap,
From tower blocks to betting shops,
And airport queues and comfort stops,
And corporate fronts on every street,
The simple man would find complete
Confusion, as to where he was
If sat-nav had not eased his sobs.
But come to Wisbech, you will find,
A sight that simply blows your mind,
Amid the noise and light and smell,
A place that you might think is hell,
A home for rabbits that is set
Amid rotating traffic, yet
It's not seen as cruel, base or low,
To treat such creature as a show,
For those too crazy, bent or dumb,
To know that they from country come.
So whisk them back where they belong,
Midst woods and trees and sound of song
From lark and thrush and swan and goose,
Seems like the place to let them loose.
Where they can frolic, leap and roam
Somewhere they could call their home.
To eat fresh grass and country fare
And not have droppings everywhere,
Enduring prison, noise and death
From noxious fumes and failing health
So friendly bombs still fall on Slough,
We've found our own solution now,
And happy rabbits gambling free,
Enjoying life, like they were me,
Will all be thankful that the hell
Of life on show and early knell,
By slow and painful poisoning
Just to amuse those circling, is ended.
Do come and see us when we're free
And join us then, we'll share our tea.
