WHY am I not surprised that no mention was made of the Merchant Navy, once again the seamen have been ignored (story Fly a Flag for Services, Friday May 15).

It strikes me, that those responsible at Fenland District Council neither know nor care what an important part the Merchant Navy played in World War II.

For instance convoys to Russia - the number of merchant ship losses was 104 either by U boats or aircraft between June 21, 1941 and May 8, 1945 and of course there were other theatres of war convoys in the Atlantic, Mediterranean, Middle East and many others. Again loses were great.

I wonder if the flag will be raised on the Town Hall Merchant Navy Day, September 3. I will not hold my breath.
