WHAT a pleasure it is to see St Peter's Gardens, at Wisbech, looking in such fine fettle.
Despite the drought earlier in the summer, they have never looked better. The grass has to be the greenest in the country, including Lord's, Wimbledon and even Dorneywood.
It is refreshing see the return of the formal flowerbed which was the glory of parks and gardens when they were regarded as badges of civic pride rather than simply a drain of council resources.
Full credit to Bob Ollier, Fenland District Council's open spaces officer, for his enthusiasm and pragmatism in motivating and leading his team. This squad of council staff and volunteers are rapidly convincing the doubters that we do indeed have open spaces in Wisbech to be proud of, as witnessed by the beauty rapidly being restored to Wisbech Park.
The group of volunteers who organise the hanging baskets can also be proud of the job they do. No doubt some of those who criticise them will instead volunteer to help.
Wisbech is truly a town of which we can be proud. Keep up the good work and thank you all.
