THE Scots are a proud race, but not so proud that they refuse an extra £1,500 per head each year from English taxpayers.
In 2006, public spending in Scotland was £8,623 per head. In England it was £7,121. This unfairness meant that:
- Scottish students pay no fees at university. English students pay up to £3,000 a year.
- Older people in Scotland receive free long-term care. In England they often have to pay for it.
- Prescription charges are being scrapped in Scotland whereas in England they show a relentless increase.
- Certain drugs for Alzheimer's and blindness considered too expensive in England are available free in Scotland.
Come on, Prime Minister - how about the same benefits for us? Perhaps if we had our own parliament and threatened to withdraw from the Union we would fare better.
