Wisbech Swimming Club started its holiday festivities early with its annual awards evening, held for the second year at Wisbech Town Football Club.
The evening was to celebrate another successful year for the club, which included representation at county and regional level, and victory in the Junior Fenland League for the fourth time in its past five events.
The event also provided swimmers with an opportunity to collect trophies won at the 2023 club championships. Held over three weeks in October, this yearly competition involves swimmers across all the club’s squads.
The awards evening is also an opportunity for the club to present a series of annual awards.
Abigail Condon and Oliver Smithee were named club captains for the coming year and presented with their captain’s shields.
Nott Johnson Trophy for the male swimmer scoring the most points in the 2023 Junior Fenland League was shared between Oliver Ryan and Jacob Hicks, and the Robson Pack Trophy, for the female was awarded to Arabella Tysterman
As the swimmers who scored the most points for the club in the 2023 County Championships, Madison Hicks was awarded the Clare Lancaster Cup and Jenson Stevens the DS Medals and Trophies Award.
For the second year in succession, Madison Hicks received the Darren Lynn Trophy as the most promising swimmer aged 13 years and under, while Isabella Burton received the Fen Regis Trophy for the same achievement among swimmers aged 13 years and over.
Continuing her dedication and excellence throughout the year in all aspects of training, competition and overall attitude, Ebony Smith won the Arles Trophy for the second successive year.
Wisbech Swimming Club is supported by many volunteers and the evening was an opportunity for the club to recognise this work. Isabella Burton was awarded the Junior Volunteer Award for her continued commitment to the Junior Squad and Paul Eden received the Adult Volunteer Award for his tireless work behind the scenes.
A week later the swimmers were back in the pool at the County Development meeting held over two days in Newmarket. For some swimmers this was their first competitive event. The 25 swimmers had an impressive haul of medals winning a total of 60 golds, 27 silvers and 11 Bronze medals and achieving 82 personal best times from 152 races.
In the nine years age group Arabella Tysterman won four gold medals, with Morgan Arthur also winning four gold and two silvers.
In the 10 years age group Holly Smith brought home eight gold and a silver medal, while in the 12 years age group Esmai Smith won eight, and Poppy Ryan three gold medals and Ebony Smith won four gold and two silvers in the 13 years age group.
Isabella Burton continued her excellent form from the club championships with eight golds and a silver in the 14 years age group, meanwhile club captain Abigail Condon won five gold and three silver medals.
Among the boys, in the 10 years category Race Elmer came away with eight gold medals and Jacob Hicks achieved two gold and two silvers from his five races, in the 11 years category Jenson Stevens won three gold and a silver.
Wisbech also has two swimmers qualified for the female “skins” final, with Abigail Condon finishing in fourth place and Isabella Burton triumphing overall in first place.
