WE are the district and town councillors for the Delph ward in Whittlesey, the main ward affected by the flooded Wash and problems on the A605.

The flooding causes the closure of the B1040, resulting in the traffic that normally uses this route to access Peterborough and various points north for employment to use the A605.

We are fielding telephone calls from residents that are having great difficulty in getting to work on time. Leaving home earlier and earlier each day, they are now concerned that their jobs may be at risk as employers can only stand so much.

Whittlesey cannot take any further development without, first of all, having a bypass and some other means of getting over the rail line at King’s Dyke.

The week before Christmas the crossing gates malfunctioned twice on the same day leading to traffic tail backs on the A605 back to Whittlesey town centre and taking traffic even longer to access Peterborough.

Whilst appreciating that Whittlesey is not in the position of some towns and villages in the south west, we are concerned that something should be done to alleviate the situation here as a matter of urgency.

We do appreciate everything that the Environment Agency and Cambridgeshire County Council highways engineers have done so far and continue to do, however we question how much more this town can take.
