The Cambridgeshire hopefuls more than played their part in a thrilling encounter against the Surrey Division One table-toppers in terrible conditions.

Solomon Prestidge scored their only try, which was converted by Mark Laws, who also kicked two penalties.

“We’re all very disappointed as it could have easily gone the other way,” said Wisbech coach Ben McCall, whose team are three points behind leaders Cantabrigian in Eastern Counties One with six games to play having won all but one of their 14 games so far.

“The weather and pitch conditions were against our style of play. However, we’re absolutely now going to concentrate 100 per cent on winning our league – not just getting out of it.”
