Wisbech Rugby Club is to celebrate its 70th anniversary by hosting a fundraiser in aid of a Midlands League player who died during a match last year.

Savanaca Kokoibulileka collapsed and died whilst playing for Oakham in September and the local club is to raise money for his family by holding a charity sports day on Saturday April 29.

The day, which kicks off at 12pm, will involve a number of sporting events, including a football match between Wisbech RUFC and a Wisbech Town XI and a social touch rugby tournament.

The main event will be a rugby match between a Wisbech Presidents XV, which will include players such as Darryl Veenendaal and Michael Gillick, and a Cambridgeshire RFU Select XV.

Bouncy castles, food and drink tents and an after party with a performance by Simon Rodgers will also be on offer at Chapel Road.

Wisbech first team coach, Leonard Veenendaal, said: “Wisbech RUFC is delighted to announce that the local rugby community, the RFU, Eastern Counties Rugby Union, Cambridgeshire Rugby Union and the British Army have all offered support and involvement in the day.

“We’d like to thank the local businesses whose generous sponsorship has made this day possible.”

• Wisbech is also hosting the Cambs RU Cup Finals this Saturday (22). The finals will consist of four matches involving eight teams from across the county. Defending champions, the Wisbech Wildcats, will contest the Junior Plate Final when they go head-to-head with St Ives 2nds. Kick off is at 1.30pm.
