Meyer, who currently plays first grade cricket for the Gold Coast Scorchers in Brisbane, Australia, will join up with his new team-mates at The Avenue in April.

The 21-year-old left-arm wrist spinner, who is also a useful middle order batsman, will replace 2011 overseas all-rounder Matt Wilcox, who is struggling with injury.

Captain Chris Ringham said: “It could be a massive signing for us. He describes himself as a middle to lower order batsman but that’s in Australian first grade cricket. Wilcox played second grade cricket and look what he did.

“He’s also a left arm wrist spinner, which is something completely different. Spin picks up a lot of wickets in our league and I wouldn’t have thought those spinners would be anywhere close to the Australian Under-19s squad!

“It’s a bit of a coup.”

Meanwhile, Wisbech Town Cricket Club look to have secured their own Australian star.

The club have moved to sign seamer and middle-order batsman Adam Meads, who currently plays for Byron Bay.

Captain James Williams said: “He sounds very keen on coming over. He’s a qualified coach and he wants to get stuck in for the club. That’s the sort of person we want.”
