DOM Stannard, the cricket club’s youth development officer, has coached Danny since he joined Wisbech as an under-12.

He hailed the 17-year-old as a “quick learner” but insisted he needs to become more confident if he wants to play regular first-team cricket.

Stannard said: “He’s developed loads over the last couple of years. He was always an excellent fielder and a good bowler but his batting has really come on.

“He works hard and soaks up information like a sponge but he needs to believe in himself more.

“I’m proud of everyone who comes through our youth set-up. Danny’s followed in the footsteps of so many – our youth team coaches do such a great job.”

The talented sportsman’s improvements at the crease and on the pitch ensured he pulled on two of his hometown’s finest sporting outfits shirts.

After making one appearance for both sides, Emmington hopes 2012 can become even more memorable.

He said: “It’s been a dream year as I’ve always wanted to play football and cricket at the highest level I could for Wisbech.

“I want to be one of the best sportsmen in the town and be able to help both teams do well. I’d love to be a first-team regular for football and cricket because I’m Wisbech through and through.

FENMEN boss Steve Appleby said Danny needs to play more men’s football after making his debut in the adult game about a year ago.

He said even though the “exciting” talent impressed him against Littleport, he needs time to adapt to the game’s physical side.

Appleby said: “Football’s different now. I was playing men’s football at the age of 13. You got kicked, you didn’t like it so you had to grow up and toughen up quickly.

“Danny’s level-headed, wants to do well and listens but he needs to keep his feet on the ground. He’s hardly played any men’s football.

“He deserved his chance and is on my radar – he’s got a bright future.”

“I’ve worked hard to improve in both sports but I know I need to keep getting better. I feel lucky for the chances I’ve been given but I’m desperate for more – it’s really whet my appetite.”

Five years of progress at Wisbech Town Cricket Club – where Emmington became a second-team regular last season – culminated in his Tucker Gardner Premier Division bow against Godmanchester this summer.

Despite getting out for a duck, Emmington, an all-rounder, praised Dom Stannard, the club’s youth development officer, for helping improve his batting ability.

However, the former Norwich City Academy youngster’s real passion remains with football – where he has shone in midfield for the Fenmen’s under-18s and reserve teams.

He was given his first start by Steve Appleby during October’s 5-0 home Cambs Invitation Cup win over Littleport Town.

Emmington, now 17, said: “Even though half of me hopes I might make it back into the professional set-up one day I’ve always wanted to play in front of friends and family for Wisbech – I’m desperate to do it again.”
