A club is packing a punch for boxing now it is up and running in a spacious new building.
Wisbech Boxing Club has opened in a two-storey spacious industrial unit in Nene Parade, after a month of hard work moving from its old home in a small building on Nene Quay.
The new 13,000 square foot boxing club base at Pinnacle House has a range of work out equipment, 11 punch bags, a boxing ring and table tennis tables which organisers hope will be welcomed as a community facility.
Saphire Lee said: “All ages can come along. We have sessions for children and are planning to run a women’s only boxing training night if there is enough interest.
“There’s lots of children on the local estate with nothing to do. They are welcome here. Boxing is a good discipline. It’s about getting the kids off the streets. We hope the community get good use out of this.”
Downstairs at the venue, the area is dedicated to training and boxing sessions. Upstairs is where boxing dinners will be held.
“It has taken a lot of hard work to get this moved across but we are so pleased with the space and the result,” Mrs Lee said.
All three of her three sons trained at Wisbech Boxing Club with her son Simon reaching top standards and boxing for England.
Mrs Lee is an England judge and supervisor and is secretary of the Mid Anglia Amateur Boxing Association and the Eastern Counties Amateur Boxing Association.
Mrs Lee, who had run the club with her husband Buddy since the 1970s said: “We took the building on August 1 and are open within a month. It has been a lot of work but well worth it.
Club nights are on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-8.30 and Sunday from 11-1.
Boxing training nights are on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays from 7-9pm
Children’s boxing for youngsters aged six to 10 years old is on Wednesday from 6-8pm.
If there is enough interest a women only night will be held on Wednesday nights.
Sessions cost £2 each.
An open day is being held on Saturday September 13 from mid day with club members people sparring, a range of stalls and refreshments.
The club is looking for 100 chairs and tables for future dinner boxing evenings. If anyone can help or for information on boxing training call Mrs Lee on 07919-263076.
