Arson reduction programme Squad 14, which was funded by Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS), was run at Wisbech Fire Station.

The young people, who were aged 11 to 15 and from Wisbech, were referred to Squad 14 through a number of different channels including schools, youth services and housing associations.

While on the course they learned basic drill techniques and were taught about how they could implement fire reduction programmes where they live.

Squad 14 participants passed out having gained an Award Scheme Development and Accreditation Network (ASDAN) qualification, first aid certificate and basic water rescue skills.

Wisbech Watch Commander Phil Pilbeam, who led the programme for the fire service, said: “Participants of Squad 14 have spent two hours each week with firefighters from Wisbech taking part in cadet-style activities.

“Donned in full fire kit, they learned basic drill techniques at the sessions, along with developing team building and listening skills, and becoming self-disciplined.

“Most importantly through the activities they gained knowledge about how fires develop, the consequences of arson and the impact on the community.”

Cash is still available for arson reduction community projects through the CRFS Community Fund, which is managed by Cambridgeshire Community Foundation. For more information log on to
