Young chefs from Wisbech Grammar School raise £200 for Ferry Project with pop up restaurant

Budding chefs from a Fenland school laid on a feast of fine dining to raise £200 for a homeless charity.

A team of ten year 11 Wisbech Grammar School students created a pop up restaurant at the Ferry Project’s Octavia View.

The pupils, who have just finished a food short course, served nearly 50 people including parents, staff and members of the public.

They raised about £200 for the charity’s Night Shelter in Norfolk Street, which needs £60,000 to stay open for the rest of the year.

The diners tucked into a mouth-watering menu, chosen by the students, of three starters, four main courses and four desserts. Dishes included tomato and harissa soup, haddock with parmesan and lemon crust and chocolate tart with home-made vanilla ice cream.

Team members turned their hand to all the jobs that were needed to make the night a success, acting as chefs, waiting staff and running the pass in the kitchen.

Alison Sloan, head of food and nutrition at the school, said: “I have run restaurants before, but never with a team of 16-year-old students. They coped with the pressure really well and it was a big success.”
