A Wisbech school, which was last year told it needed to take urgent steps to improve has been inspected again and found to be taking “effective action” to raise its game, according to a report by Ofsted.
Clarkson Infants School was visited in October last year when inspectors found it needed to improve in areas including better attendance, setting up smooth communications, improving special educational needs and was told to “act on the finding of the governance review as a matter off urgency.”
An Ofsted Inspector visited the school again in February and said that “senior leaders and governors are taking effective action to tackle the areas requiring improvement.”
During the visit the Ofsted inspector met five governors, went into lessons and spoke to teachers and pupils about their work.
One teacher left after the inspection and one is leaving at Easter but the school’s head, Dr Susan Dowling, has agreed to stay as interim headteacher until a permanent replacement has been successfully recruited.
The latest report says that: “With the support of staff you are beginning to drive improvement through regular reviews of teaching and learning, better engagement with parents and stronger focus on progress made in each year group.
“Teachers are improving the learning environment so that pupils can access the necessary resources to improve their skills.
“The emphasis on developing literacy skills from an early age is promoted and parents are rightly encouraged to contribute.”
The report goes on to say that governors, who have recruited new members to the body since the last inspection, are starting to take action but they are yet to draft a clear action plan to identify what they want to do and by when.
“They are highly committed and are seeking evidence of the work of the school,” the report says but continues that “much remains to be done to demonstrate the impact of governance on the school’s effectiveness.
Ofsted has pledged to carry out further visits and where necessary provide further support and challenge to the school until its next inspection.
