Food students sampled the delights of some of London’s most mouth watering markets and did a bit of celebrity spotting.

Five Wisbech Grammar School sixth formers and two members of staff went to Billingsgate Fish Market, where they were dazzled by a staggering array of live and frozen catches.

They got up close and personal with live eels and crabs before sitting down to a cafe breakfast in the company of the enthusiastic fishmongers.

At Borough Market the students navigated the food stands, poring over cheeses, fruit, vegetables, Vietnamese delicacies, cakes, bread and pastries.

After checking the cheeses at Neal’s Yard Dairy they paused at LOLA’s Cupcakes and Coffee Bar in Selfridge’s Foodhall.

They then made their way to Oxford Street to visit Leon, a fast food shop run by John Vincent and Henry Dimbleby, who are working with the government on the School Food Plan.

When the sixth formers sat down in a street cafe next to BBC Broadcasting House they spotted 10 celebrities and spoke to Radio 1 disc jockey Greg James, who broadcast a ‘Hello to Wisbech Grammar School girls’ message on his show, and comedian Jack Whitehall.

The school’s head of food and nutrition, Alison Sloan, who organised the trip, said: “This was a chance to show the students the variety of the commodities and how they go about selling them in the market place to establishments ranging from small, independent restaurants to large, Michelin-starred outfits.”
