The school’s main hall was a wash of red, white and blue for the celebration on September 28.

Guests were greeted with a performance from talented pianist Abigail McGlone before Charley Kirby, Louisa Parker and Madelin Brown-Ciarla showcased their musical skills.

Sandwiches, homemade scones and sausage rolls were then dished out by students at the College of West Anglia, accompanied by 200 cupcakes, hand-decorated by WGS pupils.

The Blighty Belles then took to the stage and sang a variety of well-known songs chosen from the decades of the Queen’s reign and the afternoon concluded with the National Anthem as the Royal British Legion lowered their Standard.

Kate Taylor, deputy head of sixth form, said: “It is such an honour to host this wonderful community event which sees the pupils interacting with local elderly and vulnerable adults.

“Our pupils were fantastic helping to serve the refreshments, chatting to the guests and encouraging them to dance along to the band. They all enjoyed themselves enormously and found it a very rewarding experience.

“It is brilliant to see their confidence grow and they did themselves proud. Our visitors commented on the excellent attitude and enthusiasm shown by our pupils.

“Thanks were given to Maxine and Carole from St Augustine’s Day Care Centre for their enormous efforts organising the event. Thanks must also go to St John’s Ambulance who attended the event and to Asda who kindly donated items towards the afternoon tea itself.”
