Vintage homeware shop opens in Wisbech

A shop that sells a quirky mix of vintage and new items for the home was officially opened by the new Fenland poet laureate who wrote a poem especially for the occasion.

Poppy Kleiser cut the ribbon on the doorway of Emporium at Wisbech to mark the first day of trading at the town’s new store.

Owner Jeni Townsend has fulfilled a lifelong ambition to run the store in Market Place which stocks small upcycled furniture items, stationery and homeware.

Ms Townsend, who has sold art to the Towner Gallery in East Sussex, which comes under the umbrella of the Tate gallery groups, said: “I moved to the Fens last summer and love it here. I love the landscape, the Georgian architecture and the people.

“It’s a great time to start a business and an exciting venture for me.”

She is also teaching English part time at the College of West Anglia and has previously taught creative writing, worked as a community arts programme coordinator and taught art and design and dance.

A prize winning poet and a designer and crafts person who has work sold in the iconic gallery - De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill-on Sea - the shop is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10-5.

Roddons Housing Association has warned this is the last year they will allow the already financially threatened Community House in Wisbech to use it rent free.
