POLICE admitted tonight that an illegal rave – which caused £50,000 damage to an empty factory-, was allowed to carry on “for reasons of public safety”.
The admission came after owner John Finn began totting up the damage caused by up to 1,000 who he estimates attended the rave at Thorby Avenue, March.
A Cambridgeshire police spokesman said: “Police are investigating a rave at an industrial site in Thorby Avenue at 9pm on December 31.
“Officers attended and discovered about 100 vehicles and about 500 people on the site. It was not considered practical for reasons of public safety to break up the rave at that time.
“The situation was monitored throughout the night, musical equipment was seized and officers have been in constant contact with the owner.
“Officers are reviewing CCTV footage and speaking to witnesses.
“There was a considerable amount of damage caused to the industrial unit and anyone with information should contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.”
Businesswoman Amanda Carlin said tonight she was in Thorby Avenue this morning and the rave “is what everyone is asking about.”
She said: “Some of the business owners thought the building had been rented out to ravers because the music was not turned off and ravers dispersed.
“When they realised it was an illegal rave, they were very surprised. It was quite intimidating yesterday when the ravers were still there, some out of it completely.”
Ms Carlin added: “Those driving to work were concerned about their vehicles - really unpleasant. Not a good start for businesses in Thorby Avenue to start the New Year.”
But she was pleased Fenland Council responded quickly to clear up mess in the public areas around the estate.
Of the police she felt “there must have been a shortage of man power to deal with this situation. Such a shame.”

Aby Def - There was 50.000 worth of damage so how are people just there for the music? Whether people were drunk or off their heads on drugs is irrelevant. They still broke into someone else's property and caused thousands of pounds worth of damage. The drunk man who was going to throw the can at the police was still part of the rave as was the girl who stopped him, so it sort of cancels itself out if you think about it. It's bad enough that you all broke in, but why wreck the place? Would you not expect the police to turn up if it was your house that was broken into and smashed to bits,Aby Def - There was £50.000 worth of damage so how are people just there for the music? This is a very one sided article with a lot of mistaken apparent facts of the night. This article has clearly only come really from John Finn, as earlier on in the night around 12 there was far more police than 6! and they even came round in the morning. The problem with raves is that there is no where to do them!! It would be nice if the wisbeach standard would wait before posting a very biased article like this one. Papers are supposed to be the voice of the people, not who has money to throw at them!!! Maybe you should ask the people actually part of it and you'd see a whole different side to this world everyone is so scared of. I don't know where the brushes came from but because they were there, everyone sweept up piles of rubbish. One person threw a can of drink at the police and a girl punched him and said "what the hell are you doing!", and he was DRUNK... Not off his head on drugs as most people reading this will think ravers are, It's such a shame there is such a poor light shed on raves, and yes John Finn if you ever get to read this I'm sorry for the mess caused, the destruction of the roof and things that were damaged is horrible and should never of happened. I've been to raves in the same kind of setting where no damaged has happened but they were most likely DRUNK. The police were there for a long time, and on all accounts most people thought it was legitimate as we had to pay to get in. Raves are all about the MUSIC, if the police hadn't be as forceful (so to speak), then there would of be a lot less hassle and no arrests. All we were waiting for to start the night was decks and a CDJ... The only reason fences etc were pulled up was because the police wouldnt let people in the easiest way. If all we want is a decent party then why the hell should you make it as awkward as possible! I don't disregard that the mess, the noise and the drug use isn't the best thing in the world. But, its one if the safest things to do, you can leave you coat hung up somewhere and it'll still be there in the morning! You can talk to absolutely anyone and meet some wicked people, I met someone from Australia! There was even whole families there, a Mum dancing away watching her (teenage) kids have a great time getting into the mosh pit and she knows their safe! It's a time to have fun, and it's all about unity! A moral my Mum drilled into me as a kid, don't knock until you've tried it! I think maybe a lot of you with such a negative view need to take your own advice because ravers are probably the nicest people you'll ever meet! If you imagined two festivals, one that has drink and one that has drugs, which one do you think is going to have the most arrests? Think about it, alcohol makes people very over the top etc, whereas drugs chill you out and make you happy and wanna have fun.I hope maybe someone has seen a new light on this now and hopefully see how one sided this is article is and has no pictures of the fun side. Shame... Awesome night though, wish it could be legal!!
