Cambridgeshire is to be hit by a one day strike on Thursday as thousands of public sector down tools.

UNISON, the largest public sector trade union, says carers, social workers, refuse collectors, street cleaners and teaching assistants who will be among those on strike.

Other unions including the GMB, Unite and the NUT are also taking part in the one day strike.

Robert Turner, branch secretary of UNISON, said: “Council workers have kept on going in the face of four years of draconian government cuts to keep the local services in Cambridgeshire running.

“They care for our elderly and our vulnerable, keep our streets clean and educate and look after our children. They deserve better treatment than they have had at the hands of this government.

“Taking strike action is never easy by my members are sending a clear message to the government that they have had enough. Low paid women make up the backbone of most local councils and they deserve to be paid a decent wage.”

There will be picket lines of protesters at workplaces across the county and a demonstration through Cambridge.
