Stranded cat dramatically rescued from Nene Quay in Wisbech

A dramatic rescue was launched to rescue a cat stuck on railings in Wisbech on Saturday.

At 9.35am, one crew from Wisbech was called to reports of a cat stuck on railings above the River Nene at Nene Quay in Wisbech.

Firefighers rescued the cat and returned to their station by 11.20am.

Watch Commander John Chelton said: “We received a call stating a cat was perched precariously on a structure six feet above the falling tide of the River Nene in Wisbech.

“When the crew arrived it was clear that even with our rescue sled or boat, the cat was out of reach. As the tide was falling the cat would need to be recovered quickly or risk being stuck there until the tide could aid the rescue some 12 hours later.

“The quickest available assistance was provided by Robert Sayer from Drake Towage, a marine contractor based in Wisbech who have worked the River Nene for many years.

“Robert quickly attended the scene and transported two firefighters closer to rescue the cat.

“Although it was wet, bedraggled and frightened, it leapt into the arms of firefighter Luke Prior.

“The cat was assessed by an RSPCA officer and was fit to return to it owner.

“We must say a big thank you to Robert and Drake Towage for assisting with the rescue.”
