Service held to mark 100th anniversary of Octavia Hill’s death

A SERVICE organised by the Octavia Hill Society was held to mark the 100th anniversary of the death of the social reformer who was born in Wisbech.

Wisbech Mayor Viv MacRae and representatives of the Octavia Hill’s Birthplace House travelled to Southwark Cathedral for the service, which held a memorial for the founder of the National Trust a century ago just after her death.

During his address, the Revd Dr Giles Fraser spoke about Octavia Hill’s commitment to social justice and the provision of housing for the poor.

“The life and work of Octavia Hill represents something that is precious, crucial and essential to the flourishing of society,” he said.

Peter Clayton, chairman of the Octavia Hill Society, added: “It was a service to celebrate her national and international achievements of many facets.”
