Sacked Wisbech town clerk Erbie Murat has declared he will stand as an independent to try to win a seat on Fenland District Council “flying bottle green and silver colours”.

Mr Murat, dismissed following a year-long period of suspension, said his choice of colours “will ensure I am not confused with the political parties.

“I expect there to be a proliferation of candidates by close of nominations on Monday.”

The former town clerk, awaiting an employment tribunal to hear an appeal against his dismissal, is already out canvassing for the district council vacancy in the Roman Bank ward.

He said: “I believe I can make a difference in the Fens because of my three decades of experience in local government.

“I was a city councillor in Peterborough for 12 years and served as chairman of the resources committee responsible for property, finance and personnel.”

Throughout last year he fought an increasingly hostile war of words with Wisbech Town Council after he was suspended, and then sacked, following six years in office.

“I have recently submitted a claim against the town council and I am awaiting the council’s grounds of resistance,” he said.

No date for the employment hearing has been fixed.

But Mr Murat believes he has the experience and the support to win the vacant seat on Fenland Council following the resignation of Phil Hatton.

His nomination papers show the proposer as Patrick O’Dell, a former town councillor and mayor of Wisbech in 2002.

“Mr O’Dell believes in my honesty and integrity and is fully supportive of my campaign,” said Mr Murat.

  • The very best of luck Mr Murat, quite possibly the most honest member of the town council for as long as I can remember.
