The Cambridgeshire Serious Sexual Offences Unit have joined forces with Fenland Police to track down what is described as a young man aged about 18 who was wearing a black jacket who raped a woman in her 30’s in North Drive park.

The incident happened at about 8.50pm on Sunday (6), Mother’s Day, by a bench in the park, which is also known locally as Wigstone’s park.

Det Sgt David Savill, leading the investigation, said: “Incidents of this nature are rare but I would urge people to take sensible precautions.

“I wouldn’t advise anybody to walk out on their own late at night, don’t go down dark quiet spaces alone late at night, don’t go out running in remote spots.

“It’s all about sensible precautions.”

The woman, who it is believed has not lived in March for long, had been walking home from a friend’s house when she walked down Wigstone’s Road, into Nene Parade and across the bridge when she lost her way and asked the young man for directions.

It is believed she had simply lost her bearings.

“We are still building up a clear picture of what has happened. She asked him for directions and he raped her near the bench in the park.

“We think the incident lasted for about five minutes and he then ran off but we don’t know in which direction.

“The victim alerted a passing group of people who stayed with her while they called police.

“We are still working our way through talking to these people to find out what happened and what they saw.

“The woman is doing well considering the circumstances of what has happened. She is being looked after by specialist members of our team and is receiving support.

“She also has family and friends with her but its a traumatic experience and she will require further support.”

• Police are urging anybody with information to contact them as investigations continue to track down the rapist.

  • It's not unusual Noodle. These alleged journalists at WS are so frightened of appearing ethnically biased that I'm surprised they even went as far as describing the jacket as 'black'. Pathetic.
