Police are appealing for information after an arsenal of weapons was pulled from a Fenland river.

A diving team from Lincolnshire police pulled a selection of guns from the water - including a semi-automatic shotgun and a high-velocity rifle complete with telescopic sights and a silencer.

The Middle Level Drain was the centre of activity in a joint operation between Norfolk and Lincolnshire officers on Tuesday.

The diving squad from Lincolnshire were called in and recovered four guns and a sword from the waterway near Rungays Bridge, Black Drove at St Johns Fen End.

The weapons are now being investigated and checked to see if they can be linked to any historic crimes and officers are hoping information from the public can help.

The initial information given to police indicated that a shot-gun had been thrown into the drain and the divers were called in.

They found a Beretta semi-automatic 12-bore shotgun; a 12-bore double-barrelled over-under shotgun; a loaded .22 rim-fire rifle with telescopic sight and silencer; a loaded .22-250 high-velocity hunting rifle with telescopic sight and silencer.

Officers also recovered a short sword similar to those used by Viking or Saxon battle re-enactors.

They also pulled more than 300 12-bore cartridges from the water.

Anyone who may be able to provide any information on any of the weapons, or their histories, is asked to contact PC Mallett at Downham Market Police Station on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

  • Appealing for imformation? The police were just swimming in the area and happened upon this haul. I think they already have plenty of imformation. Maybe the criminals upgraded and just goit shot of the old ones.

  • I could have found a home for them too. Sadly they're obviously stolen and therefore not on a ticket so are untouchable. Does anyone know what the police will do with them? ie do they eventually get sold off at auction to pay for policing or do they waste them by crushing them?

  • So how did the police know that this arsenal was there in the first place, they didn't just come upon them by chance whilst our for their daily swim did they? Much more must be known.

  • Hardly an Arsenal? Standard equipment for most "shooting" types. Auto looks like a wildfowling model, over and under for game, 0.22 rimmy for Bunnies and ground vermin and 250 for Deer. If they had been stolen the police would have know about it prior to it's discovery and a simple check of serial numbers will reveal their last ligitimate owner.
