Nature lovers at Wisbech Grammar School have handed a £200 cheque to the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds for helping them to establish a wildlife area.

The nature conservation charity’s drive to create a home for nature sowed the seeds of a joint project at Magdalene House involving RSPB volunteer Terry Houghton and a science club at the school run by teacher Tina Crawley.

With support from the grounds staff at the Grammar School the project team has completed the first stage in the creation of a wildlife haven on the campus, featuring bird boxes, a branch and log pile and a bug hotel.

The boys and girls have made natural bird feeders from branches, planted wildflower and meadow seeds and furnished the bug hotel to attract a range of mini-beasts, small mammals and birds.

The money handed over to the wildlife charity was raised at the Magdalene House nativity play, The grumpy sheep.

Mrs Crawley said: “We wanted to say a big thank you to Terry for his help in setting up the wildlife area. The money raised will be used at Titchwell Marsh nature reserve to develop children’s activities.”
