MP Steve Barclay is to meet the transport minister Patrick McLoughlin next week to press for the re-opening of the Wisbech to March rail line.
The NE Cambs MP said he would be meeting the secretary of state for transport on Wednesday “to continue to make the case for reopening the train line to Wisbech, particularly given the potential for Fenland to provide housing linked by rail to the economic growth in Cambridge.
“This includes good quality jobs at the Cambridge Science Park.”
The MP also welcomed the news that First Capital Connect has upgraded 40 of its most frequently used trains that connect Cambridgeshire and the Fens with London.
The upgrade has included modernised fittings and new seat coverings to make the new-look fleet cleaner, brighter and more modern.
Mr Barclay, who has been campaigning for upgrades to train services in Cambridge said: “It is great news for passengers that they will today be able to benefit from the first of a fleet of upgraded Capital Connect trains scheduled to come into service over the next few years.
“Together with station improvements at Cambridge and Peterborough it is a very positive step forward in improving rail services for constituents in North East Cambridgeshire.
An estimated 86,000 passengers per day travel on services between Peterborough and London King’s Cross, Cambridge and Kings Lynn.
