McDonald’s is off the menu for the rest of the school holidays in Wisbech while the restaurant chain gives the store a make over with self order touch screens.

It will also have a new table service area where waiters take orders for parents who do not want to leave young children alone while going to the tills to order.

The McDonald’s store on Cromwell Road closed on Tuesday and will re-open on September 13.

It is being given “a major digital makeover following significant investment from local franchisee Matthew Jarrett.”

Mr Jarrett, who owns and operates the Wisbech branch, said: “We’re anticipating the changes we’re making will affect how our customers use it, with those who used to pop in for a quick bite staying longer to use the tech we have on offer.

“I’m excited to be re-opening the restaurant in September and can’t wait to hear what my customers and staff think of the new features.”

A McDonald’s spokesman said: “Table service will take the stress out of finding somewhere to sit when carrying food, potentially with children, bags and buggies.

“In restaurants where table service has been introduced previously, customer feedback has been positive, with families enjoying the ease of not having to leave children unattended while queuing.

“Many people feel it means they have more time to chat with friends and family.

“To improve the speed and ease of ordering, customers will have the option to use one of the self-order kiosks.

“These allow visitors to browse the menu, look at nutritional information and personalise their meals, giving people more time to consider their food and drink choices.

“The future changes have been designed with changing customer needs in mind, and the dedicated dining room hosts will ensure the process is as quick and easy as possible.

“With innovations led by improving the customer experience, these major digital changes will benefit everyone,” he said.

However some are upset that the closure has taken place in the school summer holidays.

Teenager Charlotte Carr, of March, said: “I need my chicken Mcnuggets!”
