A man suffered a fractured eye socket in an assault on a train after watching Cambridge United secure promotion back to the Football League at Wembley.

The incident happened on the 10.15pm First Capital Connect service out of London King’s Cross on Sunday, 18 May, which ended in Cambridge.

The victim, a 22-year-old Cambridge United fan, was travelling home after watching his team win the Skrill Premier League play-off final, 2-1 against Gateshead, at Wembley.

While en-route he became involved in an argument with several other Cambridge United fans. Shortly after the verbal altercation, he made his way to the toilet where he was approached by a group of men and attacked.

Det Con Dean Percival, of British Transport Police, said: “This was a vicious assault which left the victim unconscious and in need of urgent medical attention.

“He sustained serious fractures to his eye socket as well as cuts and bruising to his face and spent several days in hospital.

“We will not tolerate violence on the rail network and are appealing for anyone who witnessed this attack or who has any information which may assist to get in touch.”

Anyone with information should contact British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40, or text 61016, quoting background ESUB/B1 of 23/05/2014. Information can also be passed to the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
