Man dies in road traffic collision near Ely after his car hits a tractor, inquest hears

A man died when his car clipped an agricultural sprayer on the back of a tractor as he went to overtake, an inquest heard.

The tractor driver indicated to turn right into farm buildings but as it began turning the Citroen Picasso behind it overtook.

Police believe Driver Daniel Moden realised at the last minute what was happening but, unable to avert the collision, his car clipped the sprayer attached toe the rear of the tractor causing it to slide down the road and end up in a ditch.

Mr Moden 29, of Welney, was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision on the A1101 Welney to Littleport road, near Ely, on November 16 last year.

Witness Frank Christie told the inquest he was driving in the opposite direction at about 11.15 am when he saw the car clip the tractor and come towards him with the bonnet up.

He called emergency services and ran to the back of the tractor where he saw the driver kneeling on the floor looking visibly distressed and confused.

Tractor driver Mark Keys said he saw the Citroen in his rear view mirror about 600 yards behind him and indicated to turn into Butchers Farm.

He said that as he turned: “I heard an almighty bang and he hit me. I thought the tractor was going to turn and I braced myself, the tractor went up on two wheels and when it went back down I could see the car roof had been peeled off and the car seemed to just glide down the road and go in the ditch.”

The inquest heard that Mr Moden died of multiple injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Recording a conclusion of death as a result of a road traffic collision coroner William Morris said: “I’m satisfied that the driving and the signalling carried out by Mr Keys were all appropriate and given at the right time.”
