A major expansion project at a vegetable and salad factory has been completed.

Wingland Foods, based in Sutton Bridge, unveiled its new despatch area, which could create up to 200 jobs in the next two years, at a ceremony on Friday.

The extension was opened by Waitrose director Paul Walker - the supermarket giant’s salads are produced at the factory.

Mike Edwards, UK chief operating officer at Bakkavor, which owns Wingland Foods, said: “We are delighted to mark the occasion of the completion of the new despatch area at Wingland Foods.

“The additional space created and improvement in design will not only allow us to meet the growth demands of our customer, but it will give us the opportunity to invest in local employment to grow and service our business.”

Wingland Foods became part of the Bakkavor Group nine years ago following the Icelandic group’s purchase of Geest’s portfolio of 30 companies.

Bakkavor originally bought 10 per cent of Geest before acquiring the whole group.
