A lorry and a van came off a Fenland road today –within minutes and within half a mile of each other.

Luckily both drivers escaped injury in both collisions which happened at Tipps End near Welney on the Norfolk/Cambridgeshire border.

The lorry driver explained he had collected a full load of beet pellets from the British Sugar plant at Wissington last night and set off early this morning for the 200 mile drive to Newtown, Wales.

“What happened is I should have stayed on the A10 but you know what satnavs are like- mine was obviously trying to get me there on the shortest and easiest route,” he said.

However just 16 miles into his journey he believes a combination of wind and rain forced his vehicle into the side of the road and it overturned into a nearby ditch.

“I’m just happy to have escaped without injury,” he said.

“It didn’t feel too windy but I did feel it a bit as I came round the corner and along this stretch of road.”

Further along a van driver from Peterborough was also feeling lucky after his van hit a pothole and ended up marooned in a nearby verge.

“I’m hopeful not too much damage has been done,” he said as he waited for help to arrive.

“But it’s a bit too early to tell.”

Emergency services attended both incidents and later put out cones and organised one way traffic to enable the lorry to be recovered.
