VIDEO: Lorry transporting washing machines catches fire on the A1M between Huntingdon and Peterborough causing delays and forcing all traffic to a standstill
An artic lorry, transporting washing machines, caught fire on the A1(M) North Bound at around 03:50 this morning (March 7) – bringing all lanes to a standstill.
The incident happened on the hard shoulder on junction 15 between Huntingdon and Peterborough.
BBC News reported that “no-one was injured” but the lorry was “partially destroyed”, the washing machines were charred and the carriageway was damaged.
“About 15 firefighters wearing breathing apparatus fought the blaze for nearly two hours” they added.
Cambridgeshire Police warned drivers to “expect delays” this morning while the blaze was being tackled.
They tweeted: “Sawtry northbound (between Huntingdon & Peterborough).
“Lorry on fire on the hard shoulder.
“Police and Fire are at the scene.”
An hour later they added: “A1M J15 Northbound Sawtry.
“Lorry fire - Police, Fire, Highways England and Recovery remain on scene.
“Lane four now open, traffic moving slowly.
“Expect delays, use alternative routes.
“Avoid if possible.”
Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service said the fire was accidental.
Highways England reopened the road fully at about 10:15.
